Love That Extends Beyond Adoption

“We told our children that we don't get to choose where we come from—everyone has their own story in life. In our family, communication is open,” one of our adoptive mothers shared, reflecting the deep love and values her family holds. Her words highlight not only their devotion to their adoptive and foster children but also the respect and empathy they extend to their children's birth families.

She went on to say, “We love our children—and that includes their birth families, too.”

Throughout our recent gathering, we were deeply moved by the genuine efforts of adoptive parents to build bridges with their children's birth families. One family, in particular, stood out: they warmly welcomed their son's birth mother, helping her feel relaxed, valued, and included—as a cherished part of their extended family.

We are profoundly grateful for the love, openness, and courage our adoptive families show. As emphasized in The Seven Core Issues in Adoption and Permanency, “How they are identified by the adoptive family and the child will impact how they label themselves.” The way our families approach these relationships shapes not only identity, but healing and growth.

Every reunion we've witnessed has been meaningful and heartfelt—thanks to the families who open their hearts not just to the children, but also to those who gave them life. Their embrace of love and inclusion continues to inspire us all.
